13. The Ebola Voter

In his article, William Saletan is telling readers thirteen ways that Democrats and Republicans are exploiting the Ebola virus for political gain. Ever since the virus has arrived into the country (US), politicians have started to use it as a source to win in the next election. Because many people around the nation do not know much about the virus, politicians are able to twist he facts in order to convince and attract people to them. Many candidates are even making faux promises as to how they will exterminate the virus from the country. Many are also trying to convince people that Obama has no plan nor intention to protect the country from the virus- however, Obamas has never said such things. Republicans are turning many of the president's remarks into gaffe so that people will turn from Obama and turn to them. Candidates are also clamouring and protesting for a ban on travel into the US from countries that are affected. Republicans and Democrats alike are blaming the virus on crazy things. They blame it on the lack of insurance, on neglect and even on tax cuts. By exploiting the Ebola virus, these politicians are quickly gaining the attention that they oh-so-dearly wanted.
Saletan wrote his essay in a list-form, numbering the "thirteen ways that Democrats and Republicans are exploiting the Ebola virus for political gain." In each point, he makes sure to show what politicians are doing in order to gain more public attention. Saletan's tone in the essay is a unbiased, solely-based-on-fact tone. The essay is an informative one- it does not persuade the reader nor does it tell a story. However, readers can easily tell that he is criticising these politicians for using such a scary virus as an advantage to win in the next election. He makes sure to address that the Ebola virus is a very dangerous and scary one, and that people must be careful with it. Whenever he addresses a politician (rather Republican or Democrat) he makes sure to tell his readers that they are abusing the facts of the virus in order to make them like them. Saletan does a good job convincing his readers that politicians who exploit the virus are doing so only for political gain and that they should not trust these candidates.
