Los Angeles, California, has been
known as a vibrant city which requires a car or mode of transportation due to
its bigness. Being a big city, all types of event and parties are located all
over the place, typically making it hard for people to get around and attend. Also
unlike New York City, a small condensed city, public transportation is not
really favored; personal modes of transportation, such as cars, are the “thing”
in LA. However, recently, nightlife has increased in Los Angeles. Thanks to the
app named Uber or Lyft, people in Los Angeles have been able to attend various
events at night without worrying too much. Before, when attending a party or
going out at a bar, drinks had to be taken moderately and a designated driver
had to be chosen. But now, Uber had arrived in downtown California. Uber is an app
in which a person calls a car to pick them up and take them to their designated
location. It is like a personal chauffeur, but through and app. With such an
app, people are now able to go to parties and event without worrying about not
being able to drive or how to get there. As a devoted user to Uber says, it has
brought a part of New York City to the Los Angeles life. However, this does not
mean that the amounts or car purchases have declined. Yes, the use of Uber have
increased, but only for when needed. Well known as a city of display, cars are
still used and bought not only to transport, but also because in California, it
is an social indicator to which class one is part of.
The article talks about the evolution
of the use of Uber in Los Angeles, California. The author, Melena Ryzik, informs
the reader about the increase of the use of the app. She uses personal examples
and examples from frequent users to depict the current change of atmosphere in
downtown LA due to the new app. Her language is simple and quite descriptive,
keeping the reader interested. The images she placed in her article help the
reader to understand the differences of the nightlife and how frequent it has
become. Overall, Ryzik has written a great article describing the effects of
the Uber app on a major city such as Los Angeles.
