15. Saying Goodbye for Good

In this article, Wesley Hill writes about how people are not saying goodbye anymore. People may say their last goodbyes, but they find it sad to say goodbye. However, Hill wants to tell people how important is it to say goodbye because, according to him, it means "God be with you." Hill starts his article quoting a phrase from Les Murray. Then, he talks about his own experience with goodbyes. On one event he talks about how himself could not bring up to say goodbye. And in another event, he talks about how his professor told him he never said goodbyes. Hill then talks about the book A Severe Mercy. He talks about how the people in the book did not say goodbye, but said that they would meet again. The book also says that "Christians never say goodbye!” People think this way because the Bible says that people are united, Ephesians 4:3. However, thinking this way also means not accepting the reality of separation. Hill quotes another person named Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and he talks about how people can't replace others. He says that losing someone may be hard, but we have to endure it. By having a painful departure, people can have a more memorable past with each other. Therefore, Hill is also trying to say more goodbye and want to mourn for the separation of friends.

Wesley Hill does a good job talking about his opinion. He uses his own examples of what people are doing and tries to change the idea by using quotes and talks about other people. He starts the article by summarising his idea: "People can’t say goodbye anymore,” writes the poet Les Murray. “They say last hellos.” He uses a quote from another person to explain his ideas. He also talks about the Bible and explains what the verses mean to him and what we should do. However, in my opinion, the end was a little confusing. He says that he will try to change himself to say more goodbyes, but he adds many information that makes his ending a bit wordy.
