3. Crossing Party Lines at the Border

For many years many immigrants from Central America have been crossing the border to the U.S. to try and find a better life. However, even with the concerns that they have with these immigrants, Americans are finding themselves to be very compassionate with unaccompanied children from Central America. About 69 percent of Americans consider the children as refugees rather than illegally immigrants; also only one in five Americans have never heard of these children. There are three majors concerns with the policy preferences on immigration. The first the root causes of why all these children are crossing the border; Americans are torn between they are trying the escape the violence in their country or they are looking for a better education and a better future. Second, people are worried that allowing the children to live legally in their country is going to influence others to ignore the law and increase the immigration. Third, the PRRI Religion and Politics Tracking Poll are concerned that the increase in immigrants has allowed them to take the Americans jobs, health care, and housing. 70 percent of the Americans say that the unaccompanied children should receive shelter and support and one in four Americans say they should be deported back. Although there are many concerns with the illegal immigrant that does not stop the Americans to show love and support towards them.
Robert P. Jones, the author of this article, is very persuading towards allowing the illegal immigrants to become legal in the U.S. He is good in showing facts about the matter and the percentage of people that agree with allowing the immigrants to stay. However, he does not talk excessively about the downside of the immigrants living in their country. Jones shows how caring the Americans are and how at peace they are with the immigrants. It is clear that he agrees in letting the immigrants stay and it almost feels like he trying to get the reader to feel like him and agree with him. His language and writing are very good; it was not a boring article. However, the highlight of his article was his conclusion because he did not make anyone seem bad and stayed the concerns with the illegal immigrants is not over yet.
