3. "School Shelters Offer Limited Safety, and Even Less Comfort"

In the article about the current conflict in Gaza, Ben Hubbard writes about the reality of the suffering and fear of the people. Hubbard writes how most of the innocent victims in the area have fled their homes to find refuge in more than 80 schools and buildings. These are usually United Nations schools, and most are currently holding more than twice the amount of people that they were built to hold. The author uses the families living in these schools as examples of the difficulty that hundreds of people are experiencing in Gaza. One of these is the Kafarna family. They moved into one of the classrooms of a school, but a shell that exploded forced them to move their shelter outside. Mrs. Kafarna and her six children suffer from lack of food, hygiene, and health. Bombs and attacks between Israeli and Palestine troops in Gaza make the people feel that no place is safe. The Israeli-Egyptian blockade traps the innocent victims inside with no comfort, and no resources. The people trapped inside of the schools for safety have nothing except some tuna, powdered milk, tea, and sugar to feed hundreds. Rockets and strikes, claimed to be attacks on opposing troops, have already hit many of the schools and houses of citizens. Thousands of lives have been lost as a consequence of the conflict between Israel and Hamas-controlled Palestine.
Ben Hubbard does a good job of demonstrating through his writing the conflicting events that are currently happening. Hubbard uses both research and direct quotes to inform the reader without making the article sound boring. The author's uses of narrative language makes the reader feel as if he/she is experiencing and seeing the same things as the people there are. Hubbard also uses example of real victims who are experiencing the fear, hunger, and pain of the happenings in Gaza. These direct quotes are from Mrs. Kafarna, mentioned above, and others living in shelters. The direct quotes from Mrs. Kafarna help the article to portray the emotions being felt by the people living in schools and under shacks. Finally, Hubbard finishes the article with a final quote from Mrs. Kafarna; "'Where are we supposed to go?' she said. 'There are no safe places left in Gaza.'" This final sentence closes the article with a sense of hopelessness and fear, and portrays the importance of the current events going on in Gaza today.
