3. Earthquake Death Toll Rises to Nearly 600 in China

In his article, author Andrew Jacobs informs readers about the earthquake (magnitude of 6.1) that had struck the Yunnan Province on Sunday (August 3rd). Through his succint but thorough article, Jacobs feeds readers information on the death toll, the missing, and the injured. Nearly 2,900 people were injured, 12,000 homes were destroyed and over 600 people have been found to be dead. The author then talks about the troops that went to the disaster in order to help mend the destruction. He then mentions that buildings collapsed, and that about 200 people survived them.
Andrew Jacobs does a really good job informing readers about the earthquake and its results. By using precise numbers and vivid description, he makes his article a very reliable source. Also, the author uses "officials" as his primary source, which also makes the article sound reliable. Although the article is a short one (seven paragraphs long), it is very informative and straight to the point. Since the article is an informative one, the author does not state his opinions, only concrete fact. (The whole article is in the third person POV.) The descriptions he uses for the "landslides and heavy rainfall" make it sound like Jacobs was present in China during the earthquake. This enables readers to imagine what it would be like to be in the destruction zone during the earthquake.
