4. Men Say 'Uh' and Women Say 'Um'

In the article, Olga Khazan talks about an interesting "research" a linguistic named Mark Liberman made. He talks about how to differentiate a gender and age of a person based on a few words they say. Khazan tells us that Liberman came up with different theories by hearing conversations involving about 12,000 people from U.S. Based on Liberman's theories, as a man ages he uses the word "uh" more often. While, as a woman ages she uses the word "um" less often, but woman still uses "um" more than man. Liberman also tries to differentiate the usage between "uh" and "um." Based on his "research" he thinks that people use "uh" when they are deciding what to say and that people use "um" when they are deciding how to say it. He also adds a picture to show what are the words woman and man tend to speak more. Khazan explains many more things Liberman has theorised to understand the difference between man and woman and their ages.
The author, Olga Khazan, does a good job by adding pictures and graphs to show what Liberman is talking about. However, at the same time, I think that Khazan does not do a good job in organizing the paragraphs. Khazan adds too much information in small paragraphs, and that makes it hard to understand. Khazan does not use enough transition words, therefore, it makes the article harder to understand. It feels like he is jumping around and I don't understand when he moves from one topic to another because he talks about man different things. Though adding some resources where Liberman got his information makes it more trustworthy and because there isn't a right answer people will think about it. People will pay more attention to what people say and may agree or disagree with what Liberman says. The article is indeed a little bit confusing, but at the same time, it has a lot of information that will keep our minds thinking.
