4. The Remarkable Way Chewbacca Got a Voice

In the Star Wars movies, the most interesting is Chewbacca's, Han Solo's hairy companion. This is according to Alexis C. Madrigal. The creator of Chewbacca's voice is Ben Burtt, is the sound designer of the series. The Wookiees, the imaginary hairy species from Star Wars, had no articulated lips, therefore he needed to create a sound that would be believable coming from a mouth that opened and closed.

Burtt went to look for noises that could fit with the movies. His first target were bears because of the noises they made without using their lips. He looked for weird noises that bears made so he asked zookeepers, "I hear you have a trained bear that makes a funny noise." At the end of his search he ended up recording the weid noises of three bears, a badger, a lion, a seal, and a walrus from Long Beach.

Extracting bits of sound, small grunts, moans and arghs and ughs, you could make it sound affecinate. you could also make it sound angry. Cutting those different parts would make the emotions of Chewie. Chewbacca's voice became a great success that everyone would imatate it using their own vocal chords.
