8. Kate Middleton is pregnant with the “spare to the heir”

On Monday the British royal family announced that Kate Middleton is pregnant with her second child. The baby, who has Kate hospitalized with hyperemesis gravidarum, has no idea of what awaits him in this world. They will come into the world with the title of "Prince" or "Princess, a grandmother who is a queen, a father who is a future king, and mostly likely all he ever wishes for. However, in addition he will also inherit the same title as his uncle Prince Harry: "The Spare". Not only in royal families, the firstborn are the designated leaders. As the author states, they "are likelier to become U.S presidents, CEOs, astronauts and achievers". Prince William and the Duchess Kate Middleton are both the firstborn in their households, and are future king and queen on England. Kate`s younger brother James however, has recently launched a marshmallow printing business. The firstborns get everything first; in this case form toys to thrones. The younger sibling must learn how to carve their own niche in the family tree. For instance Kim Kardashian is a expert attention getter and at the same time a middle sibling. Solange Kwoles, even living under the shadows of Beyonce, is not afraid of standing up. The younger siblings are forced to try harder. "Wouldn’t you rather be Nicky Hilton than Paris? Wouldn’t you rather be Luke Wilson than Owen?" The older sibling in this case George, has their path sewed. They have no freedom and no way out to experience their fate desires. The younger sibling has freedom to create, alone, their one destiny. They have choices. They can fly a little further. They can have a little more fun. This does not mean that one will not life their life behind their older sibling`s shadow. It means that that person can also achieve greatness. A example would be the Helmsworths and Gyllenhaals and Wayans. But looking at the bright side "even if you’ll always be No. 2, you still get to grow up in a palace, which I’m betting means you won’t have to a share a bedroom."
This article is written by Mary Elizabeth Williams, a staff writer for Salon and author of Gimme Shelter:My Three Years Searching for the American Dream. The author uses the recent announcement of Duchess Kate Middleton`s second pregnancy as a way of approaching the subject of how siblings are affected by firstborns. This is seen as a common subject, for everyone is either a firstborn or a sibling. Her thesis or main idea is that no matter whose shadow you have to leave behind (older sibling), you are also capable of great things. In the first couple paragraphs Williams portraits a idea of the difficulty of being the second born. However, she changes the path of the selection by focusing on the power and strength that the sibling has. Williams also uses many examples to support her thesis. Most include famous names in the media and in the industry. Overall, this article shows how your background does not have to be the main matter in the world, and focuses on the benefits of having the capacity of self achievements.
